A Day For Tomatoes

*sorry for the crappy cell phone pictures*

I've been putting off canning tomatoes for some time.  I really dislike canning tomatoes.  Its tedious and messy and I just don't like them smell of them.  I do however like putting them in the food I cook. And no one ever said everything in life was fun...soooo...today Sawyer and I got to work at 9am.  First we went through all the tomatoes that have been sitting in the laundry basket on the kitchen table for about a week.  We picked out all the over-ripe ones.  The pigs love them so nothing went to waste. Then we went upstairs where there is a very large Rubbermaid tote full of tomatoes that are in various stages of ripening and picked out the red ones. (Its up there because the chickens decided they made a tasty snack if I left them on the table in the garage. Plus it froze 3 of the last 4 nights here.)

I filled the sink with water and Sawyer dropped tomatoes in one by one while I washed them. He is quite the helper!

He helped peel the skins off and then I de-seeded and diced them.  We canned 13 pints of tomatoes today.  I took the last 6 pints out of the canner at 6pm.   We have at least that many tomatoes in the tote upstairs ripening yet. When those are ready we'll probably can more spaghetti sauce and a few pints of pizza sauce.
